CHAPTER ELEVEN

Problems Bubbling Over

Fae magic was one thing. Vega had battled with monsters before and lived to see another day. Forbidden magic was something she was unprepared to face. None of her potions, charms, or typical Witchkin spells would help her with that. Nor had she brought a cell phone or happened to have a “toy” in her purse that was powered by batteries.

Even if she had, she suspected it would take more than a miniature box of death to interfere with time magic of this size.

Nothing she’d studied in books for her Merlin-class Celestor exam had prepared her for this kind of magic. She thought back to all the lessons Baba had taught her for defending herself against forbidden magic as well as using it. Vega’s Celestor affinity of starlight, spells that used Amni Plandai animal or plant magic, or Elementia magic that used the elements wasn’t going to protect her from forbidden magic or cut through what she was facing.

Vega paced the cemetery, thinking about what tools she had at her disposal. Her eyes fell on the power lines across the street. Probably the spell was tapping into that magic. If she was able to cut off the supply, or at least interfere with it, she might be able to interrupt the spell as she had last time.

But Vega couldn’t get inside the bubble without being affected by the spell, even if she used the time-magic spell Baba had once taught her for increasing her speed. She didn’t know a whole lot about how electricity worked, but it seemed like if she could cut off the lines outside the bubble, it might inhibit the time spell.

That would require her getting near electricity, which would drain her of magic. She didn’t particularly want to do that. Was this mission to rescue an enemy worth the trouble?

Malisha was a thorn in her side that would never go away. Despite the potential rewards of Malisha being in Vega’s debt, in wasn’t like she had ever done anything worthy of being rescued. Vega could return to school and report her findings to the administration. They could call in the Witchkin Council to deal with it.

But it was hard to say how long it would take the council to come to the rescue. There were innocent Morties trapped in that bubble of time magic, not just Malisha. They didn’t deserve to be dragged into a time warp caused by forbidden magic.

And it wasn’t like Malisha was completely bad. Vega had witnessed Malisha repairing graves this year that she had previously vandalized in her teenage years. It was possible she might be growing a conscience.

Vega considered what Angela might think if Vega left Malisha to fend for herself. She wanted to be a good role model for her charge—even if it meant she wasn’t going to be able to allow her nemesis to be crushed by time magic.

Vega retreated to the shadows of a tree and drew runes to ward herself before she opened the portal within her purse.
